Limón Dance Company Foundation Gala 2011

 

 

 

 

Livents attended The José Limón Dance Foundation Gala on Thursday, June 9, 2011. The evening commenced with the performances held at the John Jay College, following with dinner & awards at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City. The José Limón Dance Foundation honored Daisy Expósito-Ulla & her company: d expósito & Partners, for their work with the organization over the past two years. She has been a pioneer in Hispanic communications, a Latino cultural advocate, and a supporter of the Arts. According to Gabriela Poler-Buzali, Executive Director for the Jose Limon Dance Foundation, Daisy and her company has helped foundation reinvigorate its brand with a new identity.

The highlight of the performance program at the John Jay College was the revival of 1958 dance masterpiece, Missa Brevis, an epic work by José Limón, legendary dancer/choreographer, live in collaboration with the 40-member choir Voices of Ascension, conducted by Dennis Keene. Missa Brevis was last performed in New York ten years ago at Riverside Church. “We deliberately selected Missa for this year’s gala performance because of its deep significance and relevance to our times,” says Carla Maxwell, Artistic Director for the Limón Dance Company and protégé of José Limón. “This masterpiece has a message of hope and rebirth, as it is scored to Missa Brevis in Tempori Belli, composed by Hungarian composer, Zoltan Kodaly, at the time when the Russian army was besieging the Nazi-occupied Budapest. With Limón’s stirring choreography, this masterpiece powerfully depicts the indomitable human spirit rising up after near destruction, and it serves as a poignant reminder that, with hope, we can prevail during difficult times.”

Governors Island Alliance 2011 Benefit

The Governors Island Alliance held their annual benefit on Monday, June 20, 2011 in the Commanding Officers Quarters of the island. The successful gala has attracted 250 civic, business, and political leaders. This year, the organization honored Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Linda Fagan, US Coast Guard Captain of the Port of NY and NJ, and Kenneth Fisher, Founding GIA Chair.

Governors Island Alliance is a coalition of organiza­tions and individuals work­ing to celebrate the Island’s rich history, create memora­ble parks and public spaces, and ensure appropriate reuse of the Island and its historic structures. Since 1995, the mem­bers of the Governors Island Alliance have worked collaboratively to return the Island to its right­ful owners, the people of New York. Their concept of redevel­oping the Island as a great civic space was the basis for the 2003 transfer from the Federal Government to the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation (now The Trust for Governors Island) and the National Park Service (NPS). Governors Island will soon boast about 110 acres of pub­lic open space. The land­scaped grounds and 19th century homes in the Island’s spectacular 93-acre National Landmark Historic District are permanently protected under city, state, and federal law. The Alliance is commit­ted to working with The Trust for Governors Island, NPS, and their elected officials to ensure that the final plans and redevelopment proposals set public access, park pro­gramming, and historic pres­ervation as primary goals – and that there is funding to make these plans happen.

Contributions are essential to the Alliance’s free public programs. GIA welcomes thousands of New Yorkers to the Island every summer with concerts, arts & educational programs. Bidawee Gala 2011

 

 

Bideawee, Inc. is a leading pet adoption and animal welfare organization serving the Long Island and New York metropolitan area communities. Livents had the honor of attending their annual benefit on Monday, June 13, 2011. Bideawee, which means “stay awhile,” in Scottish, is one of the country’s oldest and most respected animal welfare and pet adoption organizations.

Founded in 1903 by Mrs. Flora Kibbe, Bideawee provides shelter, care, and compassion to homeless animals. They have helped many of them find their homes for over 100 years. Bideawee operates three locations in New York: Manhattan, Wantagh and Westhampton. It is home to approximately 350 to 500 animals at any given time and places thousands of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens in loving homes annually. Bideawee sheltered animals receive thorough medical examinations, and are spayed/neutered and micro-chipped before approved for adoption.

Bideawee recently partnered up with Last Hope Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation, Inc. to lease a portion of The Bideawee Campus for Pets & People in Wantagh to provide animal rescue and pet adoption services to area residents. The Bideawee Campus for Pets & People will continue to offer its continuum of animal welfare and learning programs. Bideawee is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) humane organization and 100 percent of Bideawee funding is derived solely from private donations that compassionately helps these less fortunate animals.

New York, May 17, 2011 – It was bright lights, big city, and even bigger generosity as New York City, led by the retail and financial industries, came together to raise more than $3.5 million at Ronald McDonald House® New York’s 19^th Annual Gala. The evening’s total represented the highest amount raised in the history of the event. Held on May 16, 2011 at the Waldorf Astoria Grand Ballroom, the gala was hosted by legendary TV personality Barbara Walters, who served as master of ceremonies. The funds raised will support the organization’s mission of providing temporary housing for pediatric cancer patients and their families while the child undergoing active treatment at one or more of 13 nearby partnering hospitals throughout the city. Ronald McDonald House New York is the largest RMH-facility out of more than 300 worldwide.

“We are very grateful and honored to have received such generous consideration from the community,” said Stanley B. Shopkorn, chairman of the Ronald McDonald House Board of Directors, and managing partner of Hilltop Park Associates LLC. “This year’s event was memorable not just for the records that were set, but for the hope that it will bring to our families who come here seeking a home-away-from-home while in crisis.”

This year’s Gala celebrated two very special honorees. Introduced by Ralph Schlosstein, his former partner and co-founder of BlackRock, the first honoree of the evening was Keith T. Anderson, chief investment officer for Soros Fund Management, LLC and its principal entity, the Quantum Fund.

VF Corporation’s Chairman, President & CEO Eric C. Wiseman was also honored, celebrating the achievement with his wife Susan and their two daughters. During his acceptance speech, Mr. Wiseman noted that VF Corporation’s private jet participates in the Corporate Angels’ program, flying families to Newark, NJ, weekly so that children with cancer might receive free transportation to treatment.

Other notable New Yorkers in attendance at the Gala included Tina and Terry Lundgren, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s; Nancy Shevell and Myron Shevell, the Shevell Group; Kenneth G. Langone; Joseph Gromek, Warnaco, Inc.; Louise and Vince Camuto, The Camuto Group; Milton Berlinski, The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., Jeff Gennette, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s; and Donna Karan made a brief appearance before the evening’s end.

Along with the honoree presentations and remarks from Barbara Walters, this year’s Gala also featured a moving performance by the Ronald McDonald House New York Chorus, comprised of children who are currently staying at the House. Led by Steven Reineke, music director of the New York Pops, the children were joined by their parents in singing, “I Will Always Be There,” an original composition written by Dylan and Cain Hartung, former residents of the House who put their story of fighting cancer to music. 2011 PEN Literary Gala

On Tuesday, April 26, 2011, Livents had the honor in attending the PEN Literary Gala that was held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, NY. With 550 guests, the attendees ranged from writers to filmmakers to supporters, who helped raise $1,000,000 for the organization and its activities.

The PEN’s Freedom to Write Award honored Nasrin Sotoudeh, a human-rights lawyer and writer. An inspirational individual, who defended the opinions and beliefs of her clients, ranging from Iranian opposition activists and politicians. She was accused of activities against Iran national security and propaganda against the regime. Since her arrest, Sotoudeh has been held in solitary confinement and was denied to see her family. Sotoudeh continues to protest her detention and ill treatment by going on dry hunger strikes (refusal of both food and water). Her bravery becomes more and more admirable every day.

Additionally, Michael Ondaatje, Sri Lanka-born author of “The English Patient,” received the PEN Literary Service Award. His works include Divisadero, The Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of Editing Film, Anil's Ghost, The English Patient, In the Skin of a Lion, Coming Through Slaughter, The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, and his memoir, Running in the Family. His collections of poetry include Secular Love, The Cinnamon Peeler, and Handwriting. He has made two documentary films: Sons of Captain Poetry and The Clinton Special. His forthcoming novel, The Cat's Table, will be published in the fall of 2011. Ondaatje's devotion to literature has influenced individuals across the nation and around the world.

The event is one of the PEN American Center's largest source of unrestricted support. It provides crucial funding for their work to secure the liberty of persecuted and imprisoned writers around the world, to defend freedom of expression wherever it is threatened, and to promote literature and international cultural exchange. The PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award is granted to an imprisoned writer of conscience in particularly dire circumstances. Also presented to a writer is the PEN Literary Service Award for critically acclaimed work that illuminates the human condition in original and powerful ways.

Give Kids A Shot! National Meningitis Association Gala

Livents was cordially invited to attend the National Meningitis Association Gala 2011's GIVE KIDS A SHOT! - "A Benefit to Save Lives in the Fight Against Meningitis, a Vaccine-Preventable Disease." This signature fundraising event will help NMA continue and expand its vital work in the fight against meningitis. The honoree was former New York Giants Football great, Bart Oates and his wife Michelle for their 25 year commitment to Pediatric Neurological Research with the Children’s Advocacy Award.

Meningococcal disease is a rare but sometimes deadly disease,also known as bacterial meningitis,that strikes adolescents and young adults.The disease spreads quickly and within hours of the first symptoms can cause organ failure, brain damage, amputation of limbs or death.Parents and their children should learn more about meningococcal disease and prevention. Vaccination can prevent most cases of the disease.

Ballet Hispanico Gala 2011

Livents gladly supports Ballet Hispanico Gala, 2011. The Gala was held at the extraordinary Palm Court of The Plaza hotel on April 11, 2011. Over 450 guests attended and raised a record-breaking over $1 million to support the Ballet Hispanico Company, School of Dance, and Education & Outreach programs. The Honorees of the spring Gala were Kate Lear,who was awarded for civic inspiration and Maria Manzano awarded for creative inspiration. Both women looked stunning.

Ballet Hispanico's Spring Gala will benefit the organization, particularly its dance education programs. Ballet Hispanico explores, preserves, and celebrates Latino culture through dance, art, and movement. Livents was honored to be a part of this spectacular event and looks forward to the growing success of Ballet Hispanico.
